week 5 story: pip the pup

Once upon a time there was a dog named pip. Upon being dropped off at puppy school, pip quickly was thrown into routine. He tried his best to follow in the other puppies’ footsteps however he wasn’t as successful. After stumbling into the dog hall of fame room, pip envisioned himself as the alpha dogs presented in portraits on the walls. From this point on, pip was determined to be the best service dog. His work ethic was unmatched however his results still slacked. Test day came around and it was pip’s turn to perform everything he had learned. There was a course constructed of obstacles and his goal was to guide his master through the obstacles. At the desk unenthusiastically sitting was an examiner who almost, as if, intimidated pip. Pip almost passed the exam however at the last obstacle his master tripped. The examiner failed pip quiet dramatically and pip retreated outside out of anguish. A handicapped lady was coincidently walking outside towards a construction zone. There were vehicles in motion and planks crossed over deep trenches. Pip noticed the danger immediately and stormed towards the construction site to try to save this lady. He rushed through the school yard and dove under the grated gate just barely. He quickly approached the lady and steered her away by grabbing her purse by the handles and veering away. The other puppies along with the teacher and examiner noticed this heroic act by pip and awarded him with a passing grade. At the end of the story pip redeems himself by acting heroic when nobody is watching and impressing the examiner. His character is fulfilled because there will be portraits of pip in the hall of fame room now.

Authors Notes: Pip went through many stuggles to fulfil his duty of being a service animal. He had all kinds of task like not being tall enough or smart enough that they show in the video that I did not put in there.

  1. Hi Jenny, after reading your synopsis of Pip the Pup I had to go watch the video and the comments are right when they say it's a tear-jerker! I don't want to offend but I'm a little confused as to why this story is here. It doesn't seem to relate to the Ramayana or other indian epics, but maybe that could be explained if you expanded your author's note. With that being said, the video is super cute and thank you for showing it to me!

  2. Hey Jenny, I enjoyed reading your story! It was very heartwarming and made me tear up a little. Thank you for including the short video clip for your readers to watch as well! However, I was wondering if this story had any correlation to the Epics of India or if you just wanted to rewrite a story relating to something outside of this class? Overall, I really liked your story.

  3. Hi Jenny!
I thought this story was really entertaining and made me smile with the happy ending. I really enjoyed getting to read this story because I was easily able to visualize what was going on as well as feel empathy towards Pip. I thought it was clever how the twist of Pip being the underdog that ends up saving the day was really awesome. I was wondering what your inspiration was for writing this story? Did you have an India Epic in mind or did you just want to write something fun? I think you could add some sort of Indian epic twist if you ever decided to revise your story or add to it later on! I think you could possibly make Pip have a similar story to Rama where he gets exiled or removed for doing something wrong but ends up overcoming his obstacles and being very well respected. Overall really loved the story and loved Pip!
