Reading Notes: Mahabharata Part A

-The author of the Mahahbharata is Vyasa
- He didn't want just anyone to record his story because it was a large task
-Brahma told Vyasa that Ganesha would write his story down for him.
-Vyasa's birth
-The king called Uparichara- king of Chedi
- Indra was sent to bribe him with a flying crystal car that could drive him across the sky
-Uparichara was flying and his semen fell into a river and was swallowed by a fish, which had an outcome of a boy and a girl.
-The fisherman told the king, and the king kept the boy but gave the girl to the fisherman's wife.
-The girl's name was Satyavati
- When she was on the Rishi Parashara the rishi persuaded the girl to remain a virgin and in return she would smell sweet
-Vyasa was born on an island
-Bhishma (terrible oath) is the son of King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga
-He has powers of the eight gods
-Satyavati becomes the love interest of King Shantanu after his wife Ganga leaves him
-Parashara was the father of Vyasa
-Bhishma takes the three daughters of the king of Kashi to bring back
-He gives them to Vichitravirya but only two will agree
-Amba is the girl who does not agree
-Vichatravirya died before Ambika or Ambalika could bear any children
-Dhristarashtra and his half-brother Pandu- their sons are Kauravas and Pandavas
-their sons fight in the Great War
-Their half-brother is Vidura
-Kunti, the future wife of Pandu, but she too had a son before.
-Her son's name is KARNA
-She sent him down a river in the basket, he was only kept alive by the celetstial armor and the earrings
-Radha and Adhiratha are married and she found the baby floating down the river and adopted him as her own
-Kunti chose Pandu
-Pandu was hunting and shot arrows at two deer who happened to be a holy brahmin and his wife
-the brahmin cursed Pandu, and the king swore to celibacy and lived in solitary with his two wives.
-Pandava brothers were five princes.
-Pandu fell dead from the curse
-Madri was burned with him because she was his favorite wife
-Dhritarashta sons were called the Kauravas
-Duryodhana is the oldest son who leads the rivalry with the Pandavas
-Kunti raises the Pandu boys and lives in protection
-In Hastinapura lives Pandus brother, the blind king Dhritarashtra
-Duryodhana plans to Bhima, one of Pandu's sons
-Drona becomes a teacher to the Pandavas and the Kauravas.
-Drona is a brahmin by birth, not a warrior
-Pandavas eldest sons, Yudhishthira, Bhima, and Arjuna
-Ekalavya is one of the sons of the king of a bhil tribe who wanted to be taught by Drona
-Now that both clans of sons (P & K) were trained, they had a tournament
-Arjuna has the greatest skill
-Karna (son of Kunti) shows up at the tournament
-Drona asks the boys to seek his revenge on King Drupada, who had treated him wrong years ago
-As Duryodhana is more jealous, he plans to get rid of the Pandavas and Kunti.
