Reading: Week Two Anthology

Bibliography: Vanarinda Jataka, in The Jataka: Volume 1 translated by Robert Chalmers, The Crocodile in The River

This takes place a story of the past during a story of the present where Buddha is a monkey and is plotting against by a crocodile. He starts off by mentioning that this is not the first time Devadatta has plotting against him and begins to tell a story of the past to his fellow monks. The Bodhisatta reincarnated as a monkey and was large and strong. Every day the monkey took the same pattern from the island he rested on from a rock and another piece of land. We now see the monkey has developed a habitual routine of going from this rock to the land. The crock in this story has a mate that asked him to do her a favor by catching this monkey for her pleasure, so the crock perches on the rock to wait for the monkey-king to arrive back. The Bodhisatta noticed the change in the rocks height and calls to the rock and the crock returned with an answer back revealing his true intentions. The monkey-king outsmarts the crock by giving the crock a strategy. The monkey safely makes a quick return and the crock praises the monkey for his smarts and strategy.
