Reading Notes: The Myth Of Arachne

" The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the Earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spiders web."    -Pablo Picasso

Do you ever wonder where the first spider came from or where their place in life came to be? Why are these aracnid animals so scary but create such beautiful webs? Today Im sharing notes of the myth of Arachne.

-In mythology, we see people being able to change and shapeshift into their other forms at their own say so
-This is common in important Gods and their abilities
- For many morals, the mutations were often unwanted
- Arachne was the daughter of a tradesmen who spent his days dying cloth the darkest shades of purple
- She could spin a weave so good that people came around from all over to watch her hands work
- After a while her head got a little big and she made a claim that angered the gods
- Arachne refused to see weaving as a gift from the gods
- The Goddess of wisdom and crafts, Athena, heard this claim and she was angered by it
- She came down and shifted in the form of an older woman and watched Arachne spin her thread
- Athena in the form of a women started to shame her for being so ungrateful for a gift that the gods had laid upon her
- Arachne laughed at the old women
- Athena showed her true self and challenged her to a contest for the best weave
- Arachne accepted the challenge
- Athena went first and wove tremendous seams that showed the Gods in all their glory
- It still was nothing compared to Arachne's seam that showed a picture that almost seemed life like
- Her thread pattern showed the Gods from their worst point of view
- It showed their true colors in the eyes of her, and still managed to be better than Athena's weave
-Arachne showed the Gods abusing their power
-Athena flew into a rage, and contorted Arachne into the first spider
- She left her with a spool of thread from her belly
- This is why spiders have threads in their stomachs
